Dutch or Lay Reckoner

The eternal question: Is it better to Lay the Favorite or Back the Field? This tool calculates the exact profit difference for the same risk (liability).

Option A: Lay Favorite

You bet AGAINST this horse winning on the Exchange.

Option B: Dutch the Field

Lay the Fav vs. Back the Field: What's the difference?

Mathematically, Laying a horse is identical to backing every other horse in the race. However, in the real world, prices differ.

When to use which?

  • Lay the Favorite: Usually the best option if there is high liquidity on the exchange. It is simple (one bet) and usually offers tight margins.
  • Dutch the Field: This reveals "hidden value." Sometimes bookmakers boost the prices of outsiders so much that backing all of them pays more than laying the favorite. This calculator spots that gap.
